HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST APPEALS TO GOVERNOR OKOWA TO REVISIT LOCKDOWN EXTENSION OVER COVID-19...

Says Deltans are Dying of Hunger A Delta State born human rights activist, Comrade Mulade Sheriff has appealed to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State to revisit the lockdown conditions for the sake of Deltans, in his efforts to curb the spread of the deadly COVID-19 disease. Comrade Mulade, the National Coordinator of the Center for Peace and Environmental Justice, (CEPEJ) who made the appeal at Benikrukru Town, Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West LGA of the State, expressed worry over the level of hunger among citizens of the State.  He therefore, appealed to the Governor to personally take a tour of communities in the State to feel the pulse of the people and relax the order to allow for some commercial activities for about five and six hours daily so that the people can earn a living to avoid crimes in the State. He said the appeal to Governor Okowa was necessitated by the need to mitigate the untold hardships experienced by the poor and vulnerable Deltans, especially the riverine dwellers of the coastal communities of the State, who find it very difficult to access nearby cities of Warri, Sapele and Bomadi. Chief Mulade said the Governor should leave his comfort zone at the Government House, Asaba and move closer to the people, as there is no other better time than now for him to show concern for Deltans who voted massively for him in the 2015 and 2019 general elections. The human rights activist however commended Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for taking a bold step to lockdown the State in line with the position of the Federal Government to ensure that the deadly virus is contained. He urged the Governor to revisit the lockdown condition for the sake of Deltans who now suffer untold hardships, and advised that plans be made to supply electricity, food, water, hand sanitizers and other essential items to the poor and the vulnerable in the State.
