Annual Walk for Nature tagged ''Plastic Pollution: The Enemy of our Development Agenda''

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, in collaboration with the Nigeria Conservation Foundation, had its annual Walk for Nature tagged Plastic Pollution: The Enemy of our Development Agenda.

The staff of Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ) actively participated in the event which had members of the public, civil servants and staffs of private firms such as Chevron, Fan Milk, Unilever, as well as students and children participating. They walked from the Lagos State Government House to Marina and back. As they walked, they picked wastes including used plastic bottles from the streets of Lagos, with a view to ridding Lagos of plastic wastes.

The event climaxed at the State House where CEPEJ staff listened to discussions among stakeholders such as Tunji Bello, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources who was represented, Chief Phillip Asiodu, Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, Chief Dafinone, the Chairman of NEC and NCF, and the Managing Director of LAWMA, amongst others.

The Blue Box programme which was launched on the 5th of September, 2019 was further explained and the public was encouraged to separate wastes at the point of generation for proper recycling.

Collection centres for the PET wastes was communicated to the general public and house to house collection of PET was encouraged as various rewards were attached to the quantity collected.

The five start-off collection Centres are: Magodo, Bariga, Simpson Street, Lagos Island and Otedola Community.
